After having his U.S. citizenship application stalled because of his history of using cannabis, Neil Young is now officially an American citizen.
As TMZ reports, the 73-year-old musician appeared yesterday (January 22) at the Convention Center in downtown L.A. to take his oath of citizenship. Following the ceremony, he was seen exiting the building accompanied by his wife Daryl Hannah — and waving a tiny star-spangled banner high and proud.
The legendary rocker previously encountered issues with his application due to his history of using cannabis. As TMZ reports, in an effort to halt his application former Attorney General Jeff Sessions implemented a clause in the USCIS Policy Alert, which reads, "An applicant who is involved in certain marijuana-related activities may lack GMC (Good Moral Character) if found to have violated federal law, even if such activity is not unlawful under applicable state or foreign laws."
At the time, Young responded to the delay on his website Neil Young Archives, complaining that he was eager to vote in the 2020 presidential election.
"I want to be a dual citizen and vote," he wrote in the post. "When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test. It was a conversation where I was asked many questions. I answered them truthfully and passed. I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates, (as yet un-named)."
Young is set to release his long-lost 1975 album Homegrown, as well as various other archival projects, sometime this year. His latest record Colorado with Crazy Horse was released last October.
