Published Jul 25, 2008Though currently recording a new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, front-woman Karen O has found some time to debut her side-project, Native Korean Rock. Sounds strange, and it is a little, but in case you didn't know, Karen (nee Orzolek) is half Korean on her mum's side (her dad is Polish).
A firecracker on stage when she fronts YYYs, Karen tones things down with Native Korean Rock, stripping her music of anything but pensive lyrics, minimal percussion and acoustic guitars. The production is pretty damn hissy, barebones and lo-fi for such hauntingly beautiful songwriting, but whether this is a true example of what the finished product will sound like if there is or will ever even be one who knows? However, photos from her recent gig at Brooklyn's Union Pool, courtesy of Self-Titled Mag and Music Slut, show there could be a lot more to the music, possibly even a nautical theme.
O has revealed some info about both YYYs and NKR to the NME, saying, "I felt really nostalgic about playing love songs in New York in the summer because it's pretty much what I did before Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's just what I felt like doing right now so I don't think there will be any more shows like this. The main thing I'm concentrating on is the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record, which we've been working on for a while and it's nearly done. It should be out by early next year."
You can hear a selection of what I think are demos by visiting Karen's MySpace page.
