The National "Wake Up Your Saints"

The National "Wake Up Your Saints"
While Brooklyn, NY brooders the National are set to issue the expanded edition of High Violet tomorrow (November 23), you can get a taste of what's to come today. Previously unreleased track "Wake Up Your Saints" is an irregularly upbeat tune for the generally sad-sack outfit, but the song is just as satisfying as any of their more solemn cuts.

Singer Matt Berninger still lays out a melancholic web of nostalgia, talking about the friends he's lost over the years as he walks around his old neighbourhood, but there actually seems to be a hint of joy in his voice. It probably has to do with the accompanying backdrop of zippy ragtime piano and lovingly strummed acoustics. That glorious brass section certainly cheers things up. Just so long as you don't pay too much attention to those lyrics, this should brighten your day.
