Published Nov 28, 2008The only thing more impressive than having enough balls to challenge the patience and power of the U.S. government's intergalactic agency by actually using the moniker N.A.S.A. is assembling the guests this duo Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales) have recruited for their debut album.
Set for release on February 17 via Anti- and over five years in the making, The Spirit of Apollo features none other than the following: David Byrne, Kanye West, Lovefoxxx (CSS), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the Cool Kids, Spank Rock, John Frusciante, Chuck D., Seu Jorge, Fatlip and Slim Kid Tre (the Pharcyde), E-40, Z-Trip, M.I.A., Gift of Gab, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Scarface, Chali 2na, Amanda Blank, KRS-One, DJ Qbert, George Clinton, Seu Jorge, Santogold, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Ghostface Killah.
Of course, there are two other heavyweights who contribute to a track called "Spacious Thoughts." Get this: Kool Keith raps the verses while Tom Waits sings the hook. Yeah, Squeak E. and Zegon are a couple of connected mofos! They're also pretty damn good at making the most of this elite guest list. "Spacious Thoughts" is a sleepy hip-hop track laced with moments of orchestral grandeur and washes of funkadelic spunk. Starring Keith as a relatively normal MC (not as much a stretch as you'd think) dropping rhymes about back in the day (Los Angeles Rams, anyone?), Waits jumps aboard to deliver a jittery chorus and even a verse of his own in his traditional gravelly voice.
Surprisingly, it's a totally coherent and promising preview of what lies ahead for this tour de force album. Hopefully the rest of these wacky partnerships will mesh as smoothly because with such a hefty roster aboard N.A.S.A.'s vessel, the expectations are massive.
