My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel Gets Neko Case, Laura Veirs for New Solo Album

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jun 17, 2016

While Kentucky crew My Morning Jacket looked back at their past this year by issuing an expanded version of 2003's It Still Moves, guitarist Carl Broemel is forging ahead with a new solo album. Despite the patriotic and calendar-specific title of 4th of July, the full-length arrives August 19 via his own Stocks in Asia/Thirty Tigers.

A press release explains that the music on Broemel's solo set was written and recorded in Nashville between My Morning Jacket album and tour cycles. Broemel revealed in a statement that "this album is just me trying to compete with my own abilities," adding that "it was a challenge to do it on my own."

Despite being billed as a solo record, Broemel did get a bit of help along the way. The album features performances from his My Morning Jacket bandmates Tom Blankenship and Bo Koster, with the latter also co-writing some tracks. Elsewhere, Broemel is joined by Neko Case, Laura Veirs, Russ Pollard, Shelly Colvin, Richard Medek and Jordan Caress.

To tease the release, Broemel is streaming album cut "Sleepy Lagoon." You can hear the Spotify stream of the single down below, where you'll also find info on a few upcoming shows. A fuller tour is expected to be announced sometime in the future.
