Five bands went into the weekend's national finals for the Wacken Metal Battle Canada contest, but it was Montreal's MUTANK who came out on top and earned a chance to play at this summer's Wacken Open Air festival in Germany.

As previously reported, MUTANK went up against Vancouver's Neck of the Woods, Calgary's Exit Strategy, and Hogtown acts My Hollow and Burning the Day at Toronto's Opera House, but the panel of judges declared the Montreal thrash revivalists to be the best bangers of the bunch.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada organizer JJ Tartaglia said of the victory: "Saturday night was an incredible display of talent from across the country. Each band proved that they deserved to be on that stage. With great pride we will send off thrash metal powerhouse and new champions Mutank to Wacken."

As previously reported, MUTANK's big win will have them sent to Germany to take part in the international Wacken Metal Battle on July 30. Last year, Canadian outfit Crimson Shadows were crowned the 2013 Wacken Metal Battle international champions. The official Wacken Open Air Festival, meanwhile, runs July 31 to August 2.
