Murcof

Cosmos

BY Ashley HampsonPublished Oct 29, 2007

If you’ve never had the feeling of being watched, this is the album that will set such neuroses in motion. Cosmos is the third release from Murcof, founded in early 2001 by Fernando Corona, an electronic minimalist and the only member of the band. With haunting notes that slowly swell, threatening to engulf every conceivable crevice before slipping back into the void from which they came, Cosmos is an album composed almost entirely of classical instrument recordings. Its sombre ambience evokes a darkness that’s only conjured in the unconscious, painting a viciously twisted, emotional landscape. Closing track "Oort” is a near 13-minute stretch of shifting sounds and reverberating experimentation. Cosmos’s sparse, minimalist approach offers a filtered and digitised classical experience. This is truly unsettling.
