Swiss grindcore virtuosos Mumakil have followed up their incredible 2009 album, Behold the Failure, with the equally devastating Flies Will Starve. The band's third full-length, and second for Relapse, further exemplifies Mumakil as one of the forerunners of modern grind, picking up where Swedes Nasum left off. With 24 tracks in 35 minutes, Flies Will Starve is a constant attack of vicious, explosive grind, featuring blast beat drum work, ultra-fast guitars and deep, corrosive vocals. The band waste no time, as opener "Death from Below" is a visceral, lightning-speed onslaught of straight-up grind. "War Therapist" and "Designed to Fail" are anchored by unpredictable, yet memorable, riffs, while tracks like "Fresh Meat for the Grinder" and "Hailing Regression" contain breakneck, frenzied guitar work. Each song transitions effortlessly to the next, as Mumakil showcase superb songwriting, and with cleaner production than expected for a grindcore release, Flies Will Starve leaves a massive impact.
