Behold The Failure

BY Denise FalzonPublished Mar 24, 2009

The Relapse debut from Swiss grind masters Mumakil is a definite head-spinner. Behold The Failure is an insanely fast grindcore album with some death metal thrown in for effect. Often sounding like a mix of Napalm Death and Origin, Mumakil carry on where Swedish death-grinders Nasum left off. With former members in Knut and Nostromo, the band have created an album that encompasses what true grind is all about: a constant unpredictable onslaught of severe metal brutality. The vocals have it all, from shrieks and squeals to guttural growls. Add to that mind-blowing blast beat drumming and mach-speed guitars and the overall sound is extreme. At times, it's uncertain where one track ends and another begins, as each of the 27 tracks is under two minutes long. This creates a sound of impenetrable cohesive unity, as Behold The Failure, listened to as a whole, never seems to take a breath.
