MTV Announces VMA Nominees, Tries To Show It Still "Knows" Music

BY Cam LindsayPublished Aug 7, 2007

MTV has announced its nominees for this year's Video Music Awards. Set to air September 9, the 24th annual edition of the awards ceremony will take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Artists scheduled to perform include Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Rihanna, Amy Winehouse, Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Lily Allen (if that visa comes through!) and the Foo Fighters.

Surprises come in MTV actually recognising music, as well as in the nods to Justice (is this a type-o or has MTV actually picked up on a hot new artist?) and Gym Class Heroes (who?), and new categories like "earthshattering collaboration," "quadruple threat" and "monster single" that either show MTV is desperate to make things a little more uppity or suggesting we need these ultra-mega-dynamo stars to keep us safe.
