Most Serene Republic Population
Bands like the Most Serene Republic make musicians embarrassed. They make every other band that have ever attempted to write music feel ridiculous for following rules and structures. Every song TMSR write is theirs, an idea they dreamed about and wrote in the clouds, then brought back home for us to listen to in awe. Lyrically, the band play with the English language as if it’s Play-Doh, creating lucid imagery, while musically they could care less what you think indie pop is supposed to sound like. Their sunny debut, Underwater Cinematographer, floored Canada. Many couldn’t handle such diverse and complex compositions. Next came dynamic tour EP Phages, which demonstrated the band evolving, and now we have Population, the well-developed, sturdy-as-heck sound of a band that’s writing music for another race, as humans can’t possibly deserve something this beautiful. These songs are angry, heavy and bold. Emotions are overflowing from every poppy vocal melody and blossoming, jazzy build-up, hinting that something is just not right with the world these young Milton, ON raised musicians are evaluating. But with music this challenging, at least someone somewhere is doing something right. (Arts & Crafts)
