Moonstarr

The Archive

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Dec 14, 2010

Moonstarr's is among the minds behind Public Transit Recordings, the long-running urban beats label representing artists from Montreal to Toronto and beyond. Citing diverse influences, including Underground Resistance, DJ Premier and Sun Ra, Moonstarr produces funky, mellow, beat-based soundscapes. On The Archive, the artist has compiled a groovy collection of his unreleased, classic material. For example, the fresh "Scarborough RT" was originally released in 1999. This record carries out a type of dense communication in audio through intelligent construction. Moonstarr builds musical conversations of clear sounds and drum patterns with vibrancy and intelligence. The Archive brings beats resembling a cool background groove, so people who like really upfront and in your face dance sounds won't vibe to this as much. But if you like to geek out to subtly melded underground sounds, you'll enjoy The Archive's play-list of underground tracks by Moonstarr from the late '90s and early '00s.
