Moonshine is Montreal; Montreal is Moonshine. It's safe to say that Polaris Music Prize finalist Pierre Kwenders has had a fruitful year — with the groundbreaking, mood-altering MAKANDA: At the End of Space, the Beginning of Time — and he's not letting up with this latest mixtape from his artist collective. Moonshine was/is an all-night party held on the Saturday following every full moon, and on record, with artists including Kelman Duran, De Pereiras, Project Pablo, Mind Bath and ABAKOS, it's that and more.
"Agua" by De Pereiras by carries a distinct nightlife feel, both foreboding, mysterious and free; '80s dance carries the day, or night in Jerico's "Miray"; the old-school Afro-groove feel of Kelman Duran's "Patrice Lumumba" offers a haunting, reverent mode; and Kwenders' "Douk Saga" skips along in a confident dance strut. Moonshine's SMS for Location, Vol. 2 takes its vibes from Pan-African pop, funk, rap and soul to reflect the multiculturalism of their current Quebec home base. With each successive effort, the collective grows more confident in intention and methodology.
