Mono

The Sky Remains the Same As Ever

These Japanese post-rockers are staunch "let the music speak for itself” kind of people, so right away there’s an inherent flaw to this release. The purpose of a video treatment of the music is to see beneath the music and maybe understand the people that drive it and how they interact. Well, there are glimpses of the band’s personality and ambitions in this film but, really, it’s mostly montages and some actual documentation of them playing live in various world locales. How amazing it all is depends on your tolerance for this band’s unique and glacially paced brand of post-rock. Mono’s music is a very personal thing and live everyone gets transported on their own terms. Trying to capture this lightning in a bottle is quite hard and even though it comes close, this is still only for Mono completists.
