Miwagemini This is How I Found You
New York’s Miwagemini presents a lovely second album that features thoughtful production for her gentle voice and imagery. Recorded by Andy Baker in Athens, GA, This is How I Found You might connect with fans of Forest City Lovers or Cat Power but the hues aren’t quite as blue. Bathed in tremolo and ethereal piano, the record suits Miwa’s soothing crooning, which lightens songs up but doesn’t allow them to float away completely. "Picnic” sets the perfect tone, haunting and reassuring its subject in the same breath, while "Travelling Man” is a compelling stomp of taunts and warnings. The arrangement of "Pieces” strikes a fine balance between intricacy and minimalism, and "Room of You” shows off Miwa’s strength as a vocalist along with her poise as a musician. Miwagemini doesn’t get burdened by the timelessness of her sound on This is How I Found You. Instead, she creates a cool aura for these songs, which gives them a layered, contemporary urgency.
