Missy Elliott has been named the recipient of MTV's Michael Jackson Vanguard Award at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.
As Variety reports, the rapper, producer and songwriter will also perform live at the awards show for the first time in 16 years. The 2019 MTV VMAs will take place August 26 in Newark, New Jersey.
"Missy's impact on the music landscape is indelible," MTV/Viacom exec Bruce Gillmer said in a statement. "Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched."
Jennifer Lopez was named the winner of the award in 2018. Other previous recipients include Kanye West, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Madonna and Janet Jackson.
Variety also notes that MTV has not changed the name of the award in spite of backlash following Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland.
