Midday Swim

'Climbing Out of Caves' (EP stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 12, 2017

Back in 2015, Midday Swim delivered their self-titled debut EP, and now the Toronto-based indie pop outfit have followed that up with a sophomore offering. Climbing Out of Caves officially emerges next week, but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the full EP right now.

The record hears the band taking their sound in "a more adventurous and experimental" direction, as demonstrated on the bursting-with-energy opener "Living a Lie," the slightly more melancholic "Hold On Tight" and the shimmering EP closer "We Got Here."

"Climbing Out of Caves provides both a celebratory tone as well as a sincerity that brings us back to our folk roots," the band tells Exclaim! "We were actually a little surprised when some of the songs like 'Oh My My' came out that heavy but it captured what we were feeling at the time — energetic and optimistic about the next chapter."

The title itself, meanwhile, captures "the feeling of leaving the house after a long winter of urban hibernation, connecting with friends and enjoying the world around you" — so Climbing Out of Caves couldn't arrive at a better time. It's out on June 16, but you can hear the whole thing in advance down below.

Following the release of their new EP, Midday Swim will perform at NXNE's Port Lands show on June 25 in Toronto.
