Mexico's Chikita Violenta Sign to Arts & Crafts, Gear Up for Label Debut

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Aug 17, 2010

After spending the last three years travelling back and forth between Canada and Mexico, Mexican indie upstarts Chikita Violenta have signed with Toronto label Arts & Crafts. Along with the signing, the group have announced both an imminent debut album and a slew of U.S. tour dates, on which they'll open for the likes of Built to Spill and Ra Ra Riot.

Chikita Violenta's first album since 2007's The Stars & Suns Sessions, titled TRE3S, will see a wide release in early 2011 and drop in Mexico today (August 17). The record - the band's third - was recorded with Broken Social Scene producer Dave Newfeld.

Chikita Violenta's press release states that the group make music "in the spirit of North American and British alt college lo-fi rock," but it's Broken Social Scene's unmistakeable influence that stands out the strongest. TRE3S includes a host of Canadian guests as well, including Wintersleep's Loel Campbell, the Most Serene Republic's Tony Nesbitt-Larking and BSS's own Lisa Lobsinger, not to mention Newfeld, who took "a very proactive role on the record."

Two songs from TRE3S are available now. "Tired" and "All I Need's A Little More" are both downloadable from the widget below after the tracklist and tour dates. All the band ask is for your email address.
