Racial equity remains one of legal cannabis's most pressing issues as the industry continues to grow, and Method Man is now aiming to build a brand "that exists on the very foundation of justice" with the launch of his own cannabis company.
The Wu-Tang Clan MC has founded TICAL, a cannabis company that shares a name with his 1994 solo debut. As a blog post from the company explains, the brand made its debut this month in dispensaries owned and operated by people of colour.
"It has been people of color that have, for decades, felt the brunt of cannabis prohibition. Therefore, we feel it is our responsibility to ensure that people of color should be the first to benefit from our inaugural harvest," the company wrote.
Method Man himself stated, "Personally, it is essential that we use our brand to help bring awareness to the social, systemic and economic injustice in communities that have struggled with oppressive mass incarceration and racially biased policing policies."
As Bloomberg News reports, Method Man owns a 20 percent stake in the company, which has raised $300,000 USD in partnership with the New York-based JLS Fund for its launch. The company now aims to raise $3 million for a nationwide rollout.
Per the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), there were over 8 million cannabis arrests in the United States between 2001 and 2010, with staggering racial bias that found Black people 3.73 times as likely to be arrested for possession compared to white people.
