Metallica

"The Unforgiven II" (live)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jun 1, 2015

Until a few days ago, Metallica had only played their Reload track "The Unforgiven II" once, in Las Vegas back in 1997. On Friday night (May 29), however, the metal legends dug it out at Germany's Rock im Rivier festival. Now, they've shared the official recording of the performance.

Much like the studio version, this is an epic six-minute mega-ballad that shifts between dramatically heavy riffs and solemn, meditative verses. Frontman James Hetfield isn't quite on-point with all of the vocals, but the explosions of distortion pack a powerful punch, and it's not quite clear why Metallica waited so long between live performances of this tune.

Take a listen to the recording below. The full Rock im Rivier recording can be purchased from Metallica's official bootlegs website.
