Merge Records Celebrates 20 Years With Box Set Subscription

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Aug 25, 2008

Next year the illustrious indie powerhouse Merge Records will be saying goodbye to its teens and marking 20 big years in the biz. And to celebrate, the North Carolina imprint will be releasing SCORE! Merge Records: The First 20 Years, a massive subscription-only box set that will feature 14 custom-curated discs of tunes culled from the Merge catalogue.

The first two instalments in the series come courtesy of curators Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Junebug director Phil Morrison, with future discs getting curated by the likes of David Byrne, Motherless Brooklyn author Jonathan Lethem, comedienne Amy Poehler, artist Marcel Dzama, chef David Chang, and several others.

To get your hands on SCORE!, you have to pre-order the series between September 8 and January 2009, when the first two volumes will hit subscribers’ mailboxes. The number of the discs will be strictly limited to the number of Merge fans who sign up for the set, which will be distributed throughout 2009. All the proceeds of SCORE! will go to charities chosen by the curators.

More Merge 20th-anniversary events are expected to be announced shortly.
