Proper Corruption

Mercy Ties have offered up a feral, frenetic assault with their debut full length Proper Corruption. Drawing from early '00s screamo and math metal, the five-piece employ the screeching discord popularized by bands like Circle Takes the Square and Orchid in deliberate bursts over the course of their brief but heavy-hitting set of songs.

"Analysis Of A Smile" is one of the most explosive tracks on the record. Clocking in at just over a minute, the song dives into dissonant stop-start riffing punctuated by momentary blast beats and Andre Sanabria's scraping howls before transitioning into a speedy and conclusive breakdown. Maintaining their dynamism, "Now Is The Time To Make New Enemies" follows, but takes a much more measured approach to the established chaos, trudging through grimy, downtempo riffs and feedback to brew a powerful, sinister atmosphere that makes for a timely change of pace.

Sanabria's lyricism is reflective of the album's title, and is largely a criticism of society's uglier facts, as summed up by a few of the song titles themselves: "Fuck Your Male Sexual Entitlement," for instance. With Proper Corruption, Mercy Ties have crafted a piece that is equally vicious as it is nuanced, a powerful step in the right direction.
