Members of Explosions in the Sky and Eluvium Team Up as Inventions for New LP

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 14, 2014

Explosions in the Sky member Mark T. Smith is taking a break from the beloved post-rock combo for a bit to present a new collaboration with ambient master Eluvium (a.k.a. Matthew Cooper). The duo, known as Inventions, will deliver their self-titled debut album through Temporary Residence on April 1.

A press release explains that the partnership comes out of the pair being longtime pals and labelmates. This is apparently the first time Cooper has played in a band context since he was a teenager, while Smith is noted as not having played outside of Explosions in the Sky since that act formed in the late '90s.

Though Cooper is well-regarded for his neo-classical compositions and Smith for helping compose the soaring instrumentals of Explosions in the Sky, their debut as Inventions is said to discard the expectations of their collective "esteemed pedigree" to deliver eight apparently synesthetic pieces full of "ever-changing sounds and brilliantly affective colours."

Ahead of the due date, you can check out a bit of the band's music in a new trailer. Doused in new age moans and gently blipping electronic textures, you'll find the ultra-pixelated video preview down below.
