Megan Thee Stallion Is Trademarking the Phrase "Hot Girl Summer"

The year's most popular selfie caption is undoubtedly "hot girl summer," but it didn't come out of nowhere. The catchphrase was coined by Megan Thee Stallion's fanbase surrounding the release of her Fever LP. Now, she's trying to lock down the rights for the saying.

Billboard has confirmed the rapper is working to copyright the slogan after it became the year's go-to meme. Since then, the phrase has been uttered by uncountable brands on Twitter, including the likes of Wendy's, Duolingo and Forever 21.

But what does any of it mean? According to Megan herself, it's about, well, being yourself:
 

What's more, she's planning to release a song called "Hot Girl Summer," meaning if your parents and teachers haven't started saying the catchphrase just yet, they will be before the year is over.
