Mean Tangerine

'The Neon Lights' (EP stream)

Toronto-based outfit Mean Tangerine are currently in the midst of recording their third LP, but before that as-yet-untitled collection drops in August, the band are releasing the stopgap The Neon Lights EP. You can now stream the four-track collection ahead of its April 24 release at Exclaim.ca.

A press release notes that these songs mix indie rock, Motown-era soul and pop for a sound that is both old- and new-school. This marks a major change from the band's funky reggae origins, although make no mistake: you can still hear a hint of ska seeping through the grooves.

Bassist Jesse Wilks explained in a blog post that one of the songs, "On My Way Home," was on a previous sampler that was available exclusively at live shows, but this is a new version. The others are all new.
