Mayer Hawthorne Moves to Universal Republic for 'How Do You Do'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 26, 2011

Quirky throwback soul artist Mayer Hawthorne may have just dropped awesome covers EP Impressions, but the Detroit, MI singer is bracing himself for an even bigger event: his major label debut. While his career started on Madlib's Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw imprint, Hawthorne is jumping to Universal subsidiary Universal Republic Records for his upcoming album, How Do You Do.

A press release explains that the album, the follow-up to 2009's A Strange Arrangement, will hit shelves sometime this fall. Meanwhile, the first single from the set, the rollicking, organ-driven "A Long Time," was released on iTunes earlier this week. You can check out a live performance of the feel-good number below.

Though many are familiar with Hawthorne's brand of soul, the major-label push will unveil his smooth pipes to a broader crowd.

"The singer's voice instantly transports listeners back to the golden age of soul, but with a slick, modern kick," the statement explains of Hawthorne. "He's got a refined, timeless style reminiscent of Smoky Robinson and Curtis Mayfield mixed with a forward-thinking sound." We couldn't agree more.

Hawthorne is currently on tour opening for Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe. Check out the dates, including a Vancouver pit stop, below.
