Matt Mays

'Coyote' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 28, 2012

Former Guthries member Matt Mays has been releasing solo albums for a decade now, his latest being the upcoming Coyote. Before the record arrives on September 4 via Sonic/Warner Bros., you can preview the entire 14-track collection here at Exclaim.ca.

This marks Mays's first album since 2008's Terminal Romance, which featured his previous backing band El Torpedo. Despite the break between releases, a press release notes that Mays "has been anything but idle. He's been making new music at his pace and doing things the way he wants to do them."

Now, Mays has returned with a "rollicking rock record." He said in a statement, "I've always loved animals that are beautiful but dangerous. It's a good analogy for life. Coyotes are native to Canada, Mexico and the United States and that's where I lived while writing this album."

With a runtime of just under 50 minutes, the collection delivers rootsy heartland rock with a unique, atmospheric twist that comes across in psychedelic detours like "Airstrike," "Rochambo" and "Madre Padre." Take a listen below.
