Mathematik

Ecology

Building on appearances on the Rap Essentials compilations, Mathematik delivers on his early promise with remarkable assurance. While his high-pitched voice may convey youth, Mathematik’s introspective and thought-provoking lyrics reveal an MC blessed with deep wisdom and insight with an urge to spread knowledge. While many like-minded MCs have focused on the message to the detriment of skills, Mathematik attains a seemingly effortless balance. His original delivery, nimble wordplay and earnest approach prevent him from suffering from a similar fate. Ecology is also fuelled by Mathematik’s own scratches and the ever-improving beats of Erf Productions, providing entries such as the jazzy “On My Mind,” the previously released “Following Goals” with Bahamadia and the acoustic foundation of “Plastic.” On this aforementioned track, Mathematik aka Math-U rails against artificiality in the world, but manages not to sound as if he’s preaching. In fact, Mathematik remains humble throughout revealing his immersion in hip-hop culture on “Step Lightly,” a dedication to B-boying and the throwback vibe of “Strive On.” This modesty is also apparent on the stripped-down standout “Rhyme Trainin’(remix)” where he vows “Throughout the span of my life/ I’m committed to rhyme trainin’.” Good news for those interested in hearing more from this astute voice.
