Mastodon to Score Jonah Hex Movie

A bit of juicy news for fans of Atlanta, GA's extreme prog metallers Mastodon. Turns out the boys are doing something even more oddball than touring with cartoon band Dethklok: they're composing the score to the upcoming Jonah Hex movie.

The movie, which stars Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich, and is scheduled to open in theatres on June 18, 2010, is being directed by Jimmy Hayward (whose only other directorial work was Horton Hears a Who!). It is a western based on the DC Comics character who is a burned-up, Clint Eastwood-esque vigilante.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor wrote the screenplay to the flick, and they're no strangers to having interesting movie scores: Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantõmas) scored Crank 2, which they wrote and directed.

No word yet on what Mastodon are going to do with their contributions to Jonah Hex but if they're allowed free rein, it could be pretty awesome. And one of the heaviest damn film scores of all time.

Mastodon's last album was Crack the Skye, which came out earlier this year.
