Published Jun 05, 2008Mastodon have dished out some early details on their next album, which is currently five songs into the recording process. Speaking with Billboard.com, drummer Brann Dailor said "everything sounds real creepy and spaced out and different."
Recording with famed producer Brendan O'Brien (who they met through Bruce Springsteen's drummer Max Weinberg, whose son is a big Mastodon fan) in their hometown of Atlanta, Dailor and his band-mates have found themselves getting creative with an assortment of instruments and "crazy shit" that are helping them branch out. "There's so many toys to play with over at his studio, like pipe organs and all this crazy shit," said Dailor. "There are little cool things we're going to do to the record that we've been wanting to do for a long time," which includes a 15-minute jam titled "The Last Baron," which Dailor said both the band and O'Brien had no interest in editing.
Dailor expects the album to be out before the end of the year, and says it has the same conceptual feel as Leviathan and Blood Mountain, which had the running themes of water and earth, respectively. However, he refused to divulge what the actual theme was, mostly to keep fanatics guessing. "I think a lot of people didn't realize 'Blood Mountain' was a concept record," he said. "We made up our own story again this time, but we may try to make it a little more evident that that's what's going on. I like to keep them speculating on our message board. There's no possible way they could guess this."
