Published Apr 04, 2014Get ready to be trampled by Atlanta metal beasts Mastodon, as the long-running group have announced they're about to hit back with a new album dubbed Once More Round the Sun. An official street date has yet to arrive, but the record comes via Warner Bros.
An interview with Paste reveals that the record, Mastodon's first since 2011's The Hunter, was tracked in Franklin, TN, with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Deftones, Alice in Chains). The album is said to weigh in around the 60-minute mark, with bassist Troy Sanders calling Once More Around the Sun "pure, authentic Mastodon."
"A lot of people ask us if it kicks off where The Hunter left off. And to a large degree, I suppose yes," Sanders explained. "We recorded it and took it on the road with us, and then we headed back to our rehearsal space and started working out ideas. I've had a lot of time to ingest this record, and it's solid. It's a large slab of granite. I'm once again completely proud of these guys."
Though a tracklisting has not yet been made available, song titles for the set are said to include "Ember City" and "Diamonds in the Witch House," the latter of which featuring a guest spot from Neurosis' Scott Kelly. Apparently 15 songs were recorded, though not all made the final cut for the LP. The additional tracks are expected to appear on a forthcoming EP, though.
"We didn't want a 90-minute album," Sanders continued. "We like to record around the 60-minute mark. That's what our favorite records are. We're in love with all 15 of [the songs], so they might all see the light of day in some platform or another."
The band most recently issued a repress of their Call of the Mastodon collection and issued the Live at Brixton live album late last year. Mastodon currently have a number of North American and overseas dates, with a Canadian stop at Toronto's Sound Academy taking place May 10. You'll find all the concert details down below.
