Mastodon Guitarist's Post-MTV VMA Scuffle Was With System Of A Down Bassist
As previously reported, Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds was attacked after his band made an appearance at the 2007 MTV VMAs, leaving him with a brain hemorrhage, a broken nose and two black eyes. Reports out of Las Vegas are now saying that the attack was actually a skirmish between Hinds and System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian, which began inside the hotel where Mastodon performed along with Josh Homme, Foo Fighters, Lemmy Kilmister, Cee-Lo and Odadjian's band-mate, SOAD front-man Serj Tankian.

According to the Las Vegas Weekly, the incident was described by firsthand sources and a hotel security video, giving evidence that Hinds left the Mandalay Bay drunk. Upon bumping into Odadjian and fellow musician William Hudson, Hinds removed his shirt and slapped Odadjian with it in the face and chest. Odadjian tried to keep the peace, telling the Mastodon axeman to "relax" repeatedly. The police report states that Odadjian and Hudson then punched Hinds in the face, which sent him to the ground. A friend of Hinds ran to his side to help him up, and apologised on behalf of him, claiming he was "just drunk." Both Odadjian and Hudson were questioned by police, who have listed the former as a "witness" and the latter as a "suspect," in a case of "battery with substantial bodily harm.”

Hinds was released from the University Medical Center’s intensive care unit last Friday (September 14), and he is expected to make a full recovery.
