Marvin Gaye

What's Going On/Greatest Hits: Live In '76

BY Kevin JonesPublished Jul 10, 2008

It’s funny — for the unquantifiable influence that Marvin Gaye has had on soul music, there are seemingly few comprehensive visual recordings of the man in action. This two-disc collection attempts to shed a few more rays of light on the man, offering complete concert footage of Gaye performing in his prime, along with the (previously released) informative doc What’s Going On. The 1976 show finds the singer giving his all to a capacity crowd in Amsterdam, running through his greatest hits to that point, backed by a full band, small orchestra and even breakdown filling ballet dancers. Early classics like "I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and "Little Darling” get a funkier treatment to match the more soulful "Inner City Blues,” and while the dearth of tunes from I Want You (released that same year) is unfortunate, this show and accompanying documentary offer an undeniably broad snapshot of the most recognisable man in soul music history.
