The Martinez Brothers

Don't No Yet

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Mar 16, 2010

Best friends and brothers from New York, Chris and Steve Martinez are now beginning to travel the world and be known in dance music communities from Miami to Amsterdam. Their story is a bit like a dream for at-home adept musicians. Younger brother Chris bumped into house icon Dennis Ferrer, who soon became something of a mentor. Chris passed him a demo. Dennis invited the duo to play a set at eminent old school NYC house club Shelter. Gigs and releases followed, including 2009's "Debbie Downer" single, as well as crowd-pumping DJ sets everywhere, including Respect Is Burning in Paris and Miami's Winter Music Conference. New EP Don't Know Yet comes at us from Ferrer's Objektivity label, laying down three solid, unlit firecracker tracks of consistency and potential energy. With classic samples fitted in new ways, "Broke In The BX," "Won't Somebody" and the title track take us to the place where tech and soul meet, melding kinetic beats with grounded house rhythms.
