As the dark clouds loomed over Québec City on July 11, a shining light floated onto the main stage at Festival d'été de Québec — the light, of course, was Mariah Carey, the veteran R&B Diva who accepted — and defeated — the #BottleCapChallenge.
Opening with "A No No," "Dreamlover" and "Emotions," it was clear where the night was heading; a medley of old and new songs, both reworked and in mint vintage condition. Just as Carey was getting comfortable on stage, the clouds broke and the rain started to fall, first lightly, then heavily for the remainder of her set.
"I'm not an ice skater, but I'm doing the best I can," she laughed as she shuffled back and forth across the stage in a sequinned mini dress, careful enough not to slip and fearful enough not to move too much. During a short intermission and a dress change, production was forced to sweep the rain off the stage — Carey, however, didn't seemed fazed.
"I don't know what texture my hair will be by the end of the night," she laughed once more.
Returning to the stage in a purple and orange dress, Carey channelled her inner '90s pop princess and performed a medley of "One Sweet Day," "Always Be My Baby," "Vision of Love" and an impromptu "Love Takes Time." Making light of the rainy situation, she changed lyrics to reflect the weather: "I hope I don't slip" became a lyric that could've fit into her catalogue with ease.
Though her set was cut slightly short due to the rain, with one more outfit change — into a floor-length sequinned gown, of course — Carey left the best ballads for last — "We Belong Together" and "Hero."
