Former Marcus King Band bandleader Marcus King has teamed up with superproducer Rick Rubin on a new album. The singer-songwriter is sharing the news today alongside the title track and a world tour, which includes stops in six Canadian cities this September.
Mood Swings is due April 5 via American Recordings / Republic Records. It follows 2022's Young Blood and 2020's El Dorado.
King wrote the album during a particularly low point in his life. Between heartache and struggles with both addiction and mental health, he admitted in a press release, "I had an escape route already decided for myself and a backup if that didn’t work.”
That's where Rubin came in, helping King to find a new sonic (and personal) approach to coping with his crushing anxiety and inciting a change in perspective. “He helped me view mental health as a writing partner in a way,” King said of the producer. “I’ve learned it can give me that creative spark.”
“Without this assembly of songs, I don’t think I’d be around,” he added. “I hope this album can act as a safety blanket, a rescue, or a refuge for anybody struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or relationship issues. That’s what it is for me.”
King will be taking the new record on a world tour, with the extensive North American leg starting next month. He'll make his way to Canada in September for shows in Vancouver (September 4), Calgary (September 6), Edmonton (September 7), Winnipeg (September 9), Toronto (September 13) and London (September 14).
