Case of the Missing Thumb

BY I. KhiderPublished Aug 1, 2001

A mixture of environmental field recordings, electronic synthesis and various other noise sources. There are six tracks listed on the Case... CD, more for convenience than a marker, since the whole album is one continuous abstract piece. The content of the album shifts in focus, sometimes the field recordings are more pronounced and sometimes the synthesis takes precedence. The field recording's sources are comprised of spaces where large crowds of people move through what might be a museum, a park or zoo, all with the din of children, adults and elderly. This album is released on Accretions, a label that is developing a reputation for releasing improvised and unconventional sounds. I suppose in this case one might call Case of the Missing Thumb ambient installation music. For the active attentive listener who enjoys subtlety and soothing but not kitsch sounds, this album is for you.
