Maica Mia Recruit Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Mauro Pezzente for 'Des Era,' Share New Track

While Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Polaris fallout meant that the rock experimentalists were one of 2013's biggest newsmakers, co-founder Mauro Pezzente has now shifted his focus to a different project for the time being. He is playing with downtempo Montreal outfit Maica Mia, who will release the album Des Era on January 28.

The band previously played a duo, but they are currently a trio featuring Pezzente on bass. A press release explains that the sessions began with a lo-fi, minimal aesthetic, but the songs were eventually fleshed out with organ tones and more lush arrangements. They employed an MPC sampler to create songs built around crisp programming.

The announcement describes the album as "the long-lost lovechild album of a Cowboy Junkies and Godspeed You! Black Emperor one-night-stand. Maica Mia reintroduces the '90s slow-core tendencies of Low and Codeine, dances with the half-life ghosts of bygone country crooners Lee Hazlewood and Roy Orbison, and chemically rebalances the finished prescription with the electronic flourishes of 21st century dreamscapes."

The album only includes five tracks, but many of them are around seven minutes or more in length; "NeH2ble" is over 12 minutes long. See the tracklist below, and scroll past that to stream the sprawling, gloomy "Eugene."

Des Era be pressed in a limited vinyl run of 500 copies. It will also be available digitally. The band will celebrate the release with a gig at La Sala Rossa on January 24. More Canadian dates will follow, and Pezzente will join the band on the road.
