The Magnetic Fields Return to Merge

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jul 13, 2011

Back in May, prolific songwriter Stephin Merritt announced his upcoming Obscurities compilation on Merge, a label he had dealt with years before with his band the Magnetic Fields. It seems as if the relationship has blossomed into more than a one-off release, as the label has been announced that Merritt's project will once again be recording for the imprint.

While not much has been revealed just yet, Merge has confirmed that it will be releasing the Magnetic Fields' next album sometime early next year. Having put out their last three albums on Nonesuch, this will be the first Magnetic Fields album issued by Merge since the epic and sprawling 1999 masterpiece 69 Songs.

Before that new Magnetic Fields LP, however, Merritt will release Obscurities on August 23.
