When Jamie Robson (aka Magic Panda) released his first two EPs (2011's Days Are Numbered and 2012's Tokyo), the UK producer was infatuated with the idea of cramming multiple of-the-moment genres into his glassy, glossy style of instrumental electronic. With Temple of a Thousand Lights, his debut full-length, Robson refines this molasses sound, gracing the listener with eight new compositions that retain all of the vibrant energy of his early work while coming across as much more restrained and digestible. Working off the titular tracks from the aforementioned EPs, both included on this LP, Robson explores Balearic ambiance ("Chiaroscuro"), cyclic chamber synth ("Mothlight") and a boatload of post-rock climbers ("Zwolf," "Luna Rosa" and "Temple of a Thousand Lights"). Although Temple of a Thousand Lights positions Robson as an artist growing ever-comfortable with his craft, the decision to include dynamic and engrossing remixes from Max Cooper and Kid606 points out just what Magic Panda is currently lacking: a healthy dose of unrestrained personality.
