Published Mar 24, 2009One of the many bands that made a big impression on folks at SXSW this past week was Memphis, TN's the Magic Kids, a band that I can find little to no info about. Apparently featuring members of Girls of the Gravitron and the Barbaras, it makes sense then that they've currently hooked up with their hometown label, Goner Records (Jay Reatard, King Khan & BBQ Show, Reigning Sound). Whatever the case, this multi-member band seem like an educated bunch on "Hey Boy." Riffing on the '60s pop songbook, they lift the micro-orchestrations of Phil Spector or Brian Wilson for a wall-of-sound led by a Mike Love-like lead vocal, some skronking horn and some delectable three-part harmonies.
