She's a Dancing Machine

BY Dimitri NasrallahPublished Sep 1, 2006

Hailing from Poland and based in Berlin, Magda is a prodigious tech-starlet who’s been reared and acclaimed by Richie Hawtin and the m_nus crew. For a few years, all that involved was a whole lot of time DJing alongside other m_nus acts. But in the past year, Magda has issued several impressive singles, demonstrating that her time at the turntables has paid off well. And by all accounts she’s done her mentor proud with her first mix album, She’s a Dancing Machine. Like Hawtin, Magda opts for the laptop as the prime assembly tool, composing her mix in the same fashion as her label boss’s acclaimed DE9 series. Slivers of 71 tracks by m_nus artists and the cream of global minimalism are spliced together for a fluid, upbeat set featuring the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Plastikman, Robert Babicz, Donacha Costello, and Pantytec, often recognisable and yet never dominating their mixer’s deft sense of range and control. With minimal techno in vogue again, m_nus has been enjoying one of the strongest phases of its storied history. Certainly Madga — along with Troy Pierce, Marc Houle and Matt John — can take a good chunk of the credit for that.
