Mae Shi

Heartbeeps

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jul 1, 2005

Who needs an attention span when you have the Mae Shi recording albums that fail to see the point of passing the 16-minute mark? These Los Angeles noisemakers fail to show theirs on their second full-length, Heartbeeps, and to be honest, it really works well for them. With a heavy concentration on short bursts of spunky stop/start art-punk, a la Deerhoof, the quartet move between flashing their angular guitars riffs and abrupt rhythms, and fiddling with electronic sound experiments on their ventures into the two-minute territory. Though not as copious as last year’s 33-track Terrorbird, Heartbeeps is a refreshing record that really takes little energy to finish and of course, enjoy.
