Madrid

Warm Waters

BY Andy LeePublished Sep 1, 2003

Listening to Warm Waters, the aptly titled debut full-length from down-tempo duo Adam Perry and Duncan Christie, one would swear they hail from Nice rather than Niagara Falls. Opener "Warming” does precisely that, dipping the listener’s toes in a gentle bath of analog synths, rolling bass, and slinky psychedelic guitars. For a change, Madrid drop their up-tempo track — the nu-jazzy "Tierra del Fuego” — early on, only to immediately drift into outer space with the spacious, Air-esque "Stereostar.” Unlike that French band, however, Madrid eschew traditional song structures in favour of free jazz-influenced mind expansion. It’s time to get your feet wet.
