Winnipeg singer-songwriter Madeleine Roger kicks off a tour in support of last year's debut album Cottonwood this weekend, but before she hits the road, she's shared a video for the LP's title track.
The video was created by Joel Penner, and it captures nature's beauty while showing off his impressive time-lapse photography.
"I wrote 'Cottonwood' for one of my best friends when I learned that he and his partner were expecting their first child," Roger tells Exclaim! "The two of us had spent a lot of time in the woods together, so I wanted to create a song for their kid that imagined 'growing up' from the perspective of some of my favourite trees, sharing some of the advice that each tree might give to their offspring through the years."
The accompanying video finds Penner observing nature as it evolves — watching seeds emerge from pods, seedlings sprouting, and flowers wilting and drying up and re-blooming,
Some aspects are abstract, while others directly correlate with the song's lyrics, like at the 1:09 mark, where Roger sings "Your boughs will bend / To kiss the river's edge" and we literally see a branch bending.
