After teasing something mysterious earlier this week, M.I.A. has come through with an announcement about her future creative plans.
Sadly, it's not an album per se, but a Patreon account that vaguely promises to deliver short films, unreleased footage from Stephen Loveridge's MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A. documentary, exclusive art, livestream recordings and monthly Q&As.
"I've tried all the other platforms and it's like: this one is too mean and hateful, this one is too fake and self-obsessed, and this one just sells all your data to Cambridge Analytica…" M.I.A. told Rolling Stone. "I want to get back to using the internet in a positive way; I don't want to be an influencer. I want to be a truth dispenser."
Here's what she promises on the account:
I don't even know where this journey is going to take everyone... I know I'm going to travel a lot this year, and take a camera with me — so when I'm in these places that I end up, learning all this new stuff, I want to share it, and I'm just going to post whatever I'm doing, what I'm learning, who I'm meeting and what connections come my way.
I'm making films, music, making art and I'll be posting that process on here.
But I want to make it fun and random, it might be ASMR Sri Lankan cooking, or I might go and stay in a silent Ashram in India for a month and just not speak, or I want to interview interesting people, do some reporting, make clothes, make paintings, just see where it takes me.
So far, Patrons can subscribe at two tiers, the Arular tier at $5 and the Kala tier at $10. Fans will see the missed opportunity to price these tiers at $10 and $20.
M.I.A.'s last record was 2016's A.I.M. So far, it is unclear if she plans to release new music in the future.
