M for Montreal Set Shines Spotlight On Canadian Talent

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Nov 7, 2008

Organizers have announced the details of Montreal’s third annual M for Montreal music showcase, which this year takes place from November 20 to 22.

Founded by Glastonbury Festival programmer Martin Elbourne and Sébastien Nasra of Avalanche Productions, the self-described "export and network” showcase will bring together roughly 15 of Montreal’s most promising up-and-coming acts, such as Winter Gloves, Duchess Says, Beast, Pas Chic Chic, Radio Radio, Chinatown and the National Parcs, during the three-day event. And along with concertgoers getting a taste of what new talent Montreal has to offer, M for Montreal has hand-picked more than 50 international music industry bigwigs to attend the event and help promote the city’s music and artists.

In addition to the various concert showcases, which take place at Cabaret, Studio Just for Laughs and Foufounes Électriques, M for Montreal has also organized a festival finale on November 22 at Metropolis, dubbed "M for Métropolis,” which will feature We Are Wolves, Karkwa, Pierre Lapointe and "special guests.” There are also two industry panels: one "exploring the work of music supervisors"; and the other "discussing the state of the French live show industry."

What’s more, M for Montreal is expanding this year and kick-starting a Toronto edition called (you guessed it) T for Toronto. The complete details of a Toronto showcase have yet to be finalized but so far on deck are Woodhands, Lioness, the Mark Inside and Sweet Things, with more acts to be announced shortly.
