"Nothing Compares 2 U" (Sinéad O'Connor cover) (video)

While Toronto's Lyon gears up for the August 20 release of her Indian Summer EP through Black Box, she has shared a video for a solo rendition of Sinéad O'Connor's hit "Nothing Compares 2 U."

The soft-focus clip largely consists of a close-up shot of singer Lauren Malyon as bright light streams in through the window behind her head. Accompanied by her own electric piano playing, her rendition doesn't deviate too far from O'Connor's impassioned original (which was in fact originally written by Prince), although it scales back the powerful drama somewhat in favour of light sweetness.

This is the first in a series of '80s covers from Lyon. In a statement, she explains: "'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a song I've been incorporating into my set recently. There's something about it that stirs up this heartache that makes me feel instantly connected to the the audience. We've all been there. Since a lot of my other songs are with full band, it's nice to have an opportunity to just sing, in a really stripped down, raw kind of way."
