Luther Allison Songs From The Road

It's a sad fact that the classic Chicago bluesmen are leaving the planet or winding down their careers. Acclaimed singer/guitarist Allison died in 1997, just one month after this concert was recorded and filmed at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Thankfully, it captures him at the height of his considerable powers. There's no slow build here, as fiery opening track "Cancel My Check" sets the tone. His fine four-piece band are augmented by the famed Memphis Horns, and the guitar interplay between Allison and James Solberg is captured nicely. Such Allison favourites as "Cherry Red Wine," "Serious" and "Will It Ever Change" are featured, and his take on Magic Sam's "What Have I Done Wrong" is a highlight. A bonus live DVD of the gig includes one track, "Move From The Hood," not on the album. Fans of Buddy Guy and Freddie King who are unfamiliar with Allison should definitely check this out. (Ruf)
