Luke Steele Sets Aside Empire of the Sun to Work on New Sleepy Jackson LP

Australian musician Luke Steele just can't decide between his two bands. Empire of the Sun, his epic electro duo with Pnau's Nick Littlemore, started as a secondary project to his more rock-/pop-oriented band, the Sleepy Jackson, but soon took over with their cosmic psych pop. The EOTS hype machine ate up all of Steele's time, forcing him to shut down his other band last summer. When Littlemore ditched Empire of the Sun in September, however, Steele returned to his Sleepy Jackson, and now he's been chatting away about their anticipated third album.

Speaking with Australian blog Faster Louder [via onethirtybpm], Steele explained that he's almost done the planning stages for the new LP. "I think I've pretty much written a lot of the new album, but funnily enough, the record company doesn't seem too interested at the moment," Jackson said. "That's okay for me, though, buys me a bit of time for the moment. [The album should be out] definitely in the next decade, but not in the next 12 months - I'd want to, but I don't think so, no."

While that quote isn't exactly encouraging for Steele's eagerly awaiting fans, he did suggest that the album will be worth the wait. "Empire definitely changed everything; it set a new bar, really."

As for Littlemore, we assume he's still kicking back with Cirque du Soleil and Elton John.
